Driver/Attendant Vacancies

Welcome to Vehicles for Change!

My name is Ruth, and I am the CEO for Vehicles for Change. I’m delighted to learn that you are interested in becoming part of the team of wonderful people who are helping to change the lives of thousands of disabled people and their families around the UK.

Vehicles for Change operate the service under the name “RevoLOOtion” (www.revolootion.org.uk). Our yard is based in Calne, Wiltshire (SN11), and all of your jobs will start and finish from this point, so please ensure you have taken this into consideration when applying. The Hub Team all work from home.

What are our vehicles?

They are the world’s first mobile, attended toilet and changing facility for people who require a hoist and adult-sized changing bed to use the toilet or be changed when out and about. Those who require such a facility may have conditions such as multiple sclerosis, acquired brain injury, paraplegia/quadriplegia, stroke, muscular dystrophy - these are the conditions that may require someone to use a wheelchair and we offer a full range of kit in each vehicle. But many others with a wide variety of conditions or impairments (often hidden ones) may also be unable to use standard toilets.

What does the Driver/Attendant do?

As a Driver/Attendant you are vital to the organisation and its operation. You are the public face of our service. You may be the only person from the organisation most people ever meet. You are the provider of this life-changing service.

Apart from getting yourself and your vehicle to its destination safely and on time, your job has four key parts:

● setting up the vehicle on arrival, keeping it clean and stocked up and then packing up at the end of the day

● Welcoming those who come to use it as well as their families/carers/friends. Operating the tail lift to allow access, and demonstrating how to use the equipment if families/carers/friends are unfamiliar

● Politely turning away those who can use the standard toilets at the venue

● Doing PR by showing interested people around - most have never seen anything like it before, so you’ll do a lot of explaining and giving out business cards/flyers!

Organisational structure & culture

You will not have a conventional boss or manager in this role as you will work mostly on your own. Our view is that you have been chosen because we believe you have what it takes to perform the role described above to a high standard and in a way that reflects well on Vehicles for Change and RevoLOOtion. The job is fun and rewarding, it is not complicated. In reality, those you meet at events and venues (hirer, users, and others) will be the gauge of how well you are doing because they love to give feedback (usually instantaneous and almost always glowing) via social media.

Pay and Benefits

Our standard days are usually 10-hour days, and you will be paid £12.60 per hour. You are also paid for your driving hours to and from events (some of these may be within the standard 10-hour day). There is a contributory pension scheme (if you qualify), and we pay a 3% contribution. Wages are paid monthly on the 28th of each month and you will be PAYE.

Expenses are paid depending on how long your day is. Some events require hotel accommodation which the Charity books and pays for, but default accommodation will always be camping if available during the warmer months.

You would be employed as a casual worker, which means we can offer work, which you do not have to accept, and conversely we do not have to offer work. Most of our Driver/Attendants (DAs) have plenty of work during the summer and this slacks off November to March. You are also entitled to holiday pay.

Recruitment Procedure

If you are interested in working for us,then please email us a copy of your CV on jobs@vehiclesforcahnge.org.uk . We will then arrange a time for you to visit our yard in Calne for a chat and a look around the vehicles. If we both then want to continue with the process, you would be invited along for a driving assessment with our Operations team.

If that is successful, then I will confirm your appointment, and then we will arrange for you to spend some time either at an event or a half day training session away from the yard with one of our established DAs so you could see what we do and how we do it and they would show you all the systems we use (vehicle checks, fault reporting, timesheet, expenses etc). You will then be contacted by the bookings team for your availability and hopefully some events to attend.

Enjoy your work with us!

The most important thing I want to stress is that you are likely to find your work with Vehicles for Change to be fun, rewarding and probably quite different from jobs you’ve done before. If it isn’t fun and rewarding then something’s gone wrong and you need to tell us! If you don’t, we may not know!

Please email me a copy of your CV on jobs@vehiclesforchange.org.uk and let me know if you have any questions or are interested in joining us and then we can sort out a date to meet at our yard in Calne.

I look forward to hearing from you.
